[27]***Generations ago, the world fell into deep Chaos. The Master had maintained the world in a state of peace and harmony. However, an evil one called Tanzra began to threaten its very existence. People spent their lives manifesting their love to their Master while fearing The Evil One. The Master and The Evil One were eternal enemies. In strength and power they were almost equals. Even though the world has fallen into Chaos, somehow the earth continued on its revolving course.***ActRaiser is a single player mix of alternating overhead city-building simulation and side-scrolling platform action. The protagonist in the English version is 'The Master'. A deity who's been away for a while and returns to find his people have been lead astray and their civilization destroyed by the demon Tanzra, "The Evil One". The player is controls things as the Master descends from heaven on a cloud to observer the people and causes a stone statue to be possessed with his spirit. Using this this living statue armed with a sword, demons are slain and souls are freed. The sim mode begins with the creation of a male and female to tend a population center as the Master eliminates more demons and miraculously prepares the way for the people to build and multiply in their little corner of the world. In this view, and angel armed with a bow and arrow is directed against demons emerging from their layers to attack the people. Meanwhile, the people are directed to seal the layers and build where the master directs. At a certain point, the local demons and their leader will regroup to stop the progress. At this point the Master inhabits a statue to finish the job in action mode. This continues for 6 regions until one final standalone action stage completed.

The game's story is in fact a Judeo-Christian allegory; confirmed by the Japanese story of ActRaiser 2 where the protagonist and antagonist characters are revealed to be named God and Satan. No religion/faith tag yet applies to this game entry, however, because the religion of the game's creators is currently unknown to the uvl community (stay tuned). Even without the revelation of the true names of these characters, the allegory is pretty blatant. The Master descends and ascends to heaven, is accompanied by angel(s), creates life (beginning with a male and female), frees souls, performs miracles, destroys demons, creates order and peace out of chaos and strife, he cannot lose (though the player can), defeats the evil one, listens to and answers prayers, accepts offerings (which in turn benefit the people), casts false gods out of his temple, and is totally ignored by the people as soon as they perceive their problems have been eliminated and he loves them anyway.

Hint: Preforming better in the action mode will actually cause more demos to inhabit the lairs in the sim mode. This in turns leads to a higher population potential for the region.
The world map resembles North America
The English version was much easier than the original. But, upon beating the game, the Japanese difficulty level for the action mode is unlocked.
ActRaiser was provided for Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
[Zerothis]***A masterpiece of game design originally released in the early days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System , ActRaiser's enduring popularity stems from its revolutionary combination of action- and simulation-based game play. The user plays the role of the Master, a dethroned deity whose once-idyllic world has fallen under the control of the Evil One. Stripped of godly power, the Master must somehow put an end to the Evil One's reign and rebuild his desolate realm. Game play alternates between two modes: Action and Simulation. In Action mode, the Master must battle against impossible odds to pacify six lands. Pacifying a land unlocks Simulation mode. In this mode, the Master must oversee the development and re population of the territory he has reclaimed. In doing so, he will gain followers who gradually restore his godly might, empowering him to take back the next land and, ultimately, defeat the Evil One.***Shame on you if you've never played Actraiser before! This version, other than having an amazingly badass logo, is actually a lot harder than the US release of the game. Even in Fillmore 1, there are more brambles, more monsters, more everything. It's crazy great. Ian Kelley wanted to retranslate the game, so here it is! Far be it from me to deprive one of my star translators from an awesome request or two!

Breath of Fire  Capcom1994 amoeboids breathoffire combatmode consoleclassix premadeprotagonist rating-esrb-e saveram supermode Long ago in the days of darkness and magic, a young wanderer comes face to face with his destiny. You control the fate of Ryu, a young warrior and descendant of the Light Dragon Clan. Together, with your mystical friend, Nina, gain experience and skill as you battle against strange monsters.***Breath of Fire was one masterpiece of an RPG! It was chock full of more features, interesting dungeon design, boss fights, and other fascinating facets than almost any RPG I'd played before. Aside from creative dungeons with rotating floors, teleporters, disappearing walls, and other bizarre phenomena, BoF had sidequests galore (many in which you'd earn powers to transform your characters), ultra-tough bosses, and even a deep dark well-kept secret that was your key to getting the best of the multiple endings.
BoF also had an interesting plot with charming and colorful characters, and fun 'mini-games' like hunting animals with Bo and setting up a shop with Gobi. It's a shame that BoF2 was basically BoF1 with everything that made BoF1 fun taken out of it.

Breath of Fire II features four new fighting formations, which allows for greater control and strategy in battle. Adding even more depth to the series, players can combine their party members with Shamans to create enhanced characters.***Featuring a wide range of characters and personalities and a vast, endless world to explore, Breath of Fire II is the sequel to the original smash-hit role-playing game. In a world set 500 years after the previous installment, in a frontier village known as Gate, the father and sister of a young boy known as Ryu are suddenly abducted. Strangely, all the villagers appear to have completely forgotten everything about the incident, and Ryu has instantly become an orphan. At a church, Ryu meets Bow, another orphan in a similar predicament, and they slip away from town together to begin their adventure. Take advantage of the multiple game-play viewpoints found in the game (such as the quarter-view perspective during battles that made the original game so popular) to use exciting abilities like shaman fusing and dragon transformations and help these two heroes complete their mission.***This is a traditional RPG, and doesn't really do anything drastically different from other games in the genre with the battles. Enemy encounters occur at random while you are walking on the overworld, or when you're going through an area such as a tower or a cave. By looking at your menu, you are able to get a rough idea about how many random battles there are likely to be in the particular area you are in. Though they occur more at some areas than others, there will be many enemies to fight. This can become frustrating, particularly when you are in a confusing area or maze.***Another classic RPG that was butchered by Nintendo during translation. The King was killed in the conflict, and the evil Galneon ascended to the throne. In the conflict the King's two daughters disappeared. Their whereabouts are unknown.***Game description taken from Peter Karsanow's walkthrough ([[link:http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/arcana.txt]])

Arcana is a non-real-time RPG. Movement occurs in steps or turns, and combat also occurs in phases. No arcade action, or running and jumping here. The graphics are reasonable, but minimally animated. Sound is good. Story suffers the old translation blues, and there are annoying jumps, but almost no spelling errors. This is the only RPG I've ever seen with a first-person point of view that generates graphics for 45 degrees in each 90 degree turn, so it doesn't look so abrupt!

Apparently, this game was butchered during the translation. It is said that there are many differences between the Japanese (Card Master) and American (Arcana) versions--graphics, script, names, gameplay... I guess just about everything. Oh, and many things were deleted from the American version as well.

Although Chrono Trigger is a tad overrated, it is still quite a marvelous RPG. It features a huge sprawling quest, multiple characters with different skills, excellent graphics and music, and an ATB battle system that features a wide assortment of spells and even combo attacks! The game has many different endings for replay value, and you can restart with all your items and experience from previous games.
[Spiez]***I don't think Chrono Trigger is overrated at all. I can't think of many RPGs on the SNES, or even on modern systems, that can rival Chrono Trigger. Awesome story, music, graphics, characters, battle system, replayability... the list goes on. The only SNES games I'd even put on the same plateau with Chrono Trigger are probably Seiken Densetsu 3 and Front Mission... maybe Final Fantasy VI and Star Ocean. Bottom line--Chrono Trigger is the benchmark for Japanese-style RPGs.

Apparently, some text referring to demons, alcohol, etc. and possibly some plot-related text as well, were cut out of the English release. [27]***While some thought it would never be possible, DONKEY KONG COUNTRY is here for the Super Nintendo in all of its glory. Play as Donkey Kong and his good buddy Diddy Kong as they attempt to reclaim DK's stolen banana hoard from the wicked King K. Rool and his vicious Kremlings.***Donkey Kong Country is an incredible island adventure, and the first game to feature Donkey Kong's sidekick, Diddy Kong . Challenged by the crazed tribe of reptilian Kremlings, the Kongs face their cunning adversaries armed with lightning-quick moves, chest-pounding muscle and awesome aerial acrobatics. The duo also gets help from a host of friends and family, from Funky Kong , Cranky Kong and Candy Kong to Rambi the rhino, Expresso the ostrich, Enguarde the swordfish, Squawks the parrot and Winky the frog. This game has more than 30 levels, plus dozens of hidden caves and secret rooms - more than 100 areas in all. Help the Kongs recover their stolen banana hoard!***Donkey Kong Country hit the SNES with a big impact when it was released back in 1994. That's also when people started recognizing the company 'RAREWARE'. Donkey Kong JR.(from the original Donkey Kong Junior for NES) is on a quest to find his banana hoard stolen by the kremlings. The Original Donkey Kong, which is now Cranky Kong, makes an appearance in this game, and gives you tips and hints(for a fee, of course).
You must be wondering,'Why is this game is big? Why did it have a big impact on the SNES?' Simply put, it was revolutionary. It was the first game of its type. It boasts highly advanced graphics for the SNES. RARE, along with POWER ANTIALAS tools, created 3d models, which were then converted into sprites with shading. There are many weather effects, such as rain and snow, and the backgrounds are gorgeous. But the game's graphics really shine in the character's smooth animation. Since they were, to begin with, 3d models, their animation is very smooth and correct.
Donkey Kong Country also has unforgettable music. I'm sure the tunes will be stuck in your head all day long. Unlike other games where it seems as if they just plopped random notes down at places, RARE took the time the fine-tune the music, making it very exciting and memorable.
Aside from graphics and music, this game also boasts very great gameplay. the controls are easy to master, and they respond instantly at the press of a button. This is very important in later levels, when the challenges become tougher.
RARE did a great thing by adding what most games lacked, a map screen! Yes, with the map screen, you can easily travel between levels, replay the ones you like, or just go back and earn 1-ups.
Another neat feature is the ability to complete the whole game. By this, I mean RARE has given you tasks in each level you must complete. These tasks are in the form of mini-games. See if you can achieve all 101%(Believe me, it can be quite a challenge)!
If you're the type who enjoys playing with other people, then you can select from two different multiplayer modes: Team and Competition. In team mode, one player takes control of Diddy while the other takes control of Donkey Kong. In competition mode, there are two different sets of Kongs, the original and the Kongs wearing the yellow ties(the tie makes a whole difference!).
All in all, I would say Donkey Kong Country is a masterpeice. You can easily see how much time and effort RARE put into this game, and they didn't skimp on the detials. Some say this game rivals PSX games, and they're right. This game is still fun and challenging, years after it was released!

They're not completely on their own, either, since returning favorites like Funky Kong and Enguarde the swordfish provide help along the way. Get ready for the most challenging role-playing adventure ever.***My opinion of this game was tainted, or rather not tainted, by having previously only played [game=#7790]Final Fantasy[/game] and not even knowing about the real [game=#19751]Final Fantasy II[/game] or [game=#19752]Final Fantasy III[/game] games. For this reason, my rating was higher than I'm inclined to rate it now. But, when I think back. The game was new, massive, lots of surprise and wonder and, better than the 'original', when I played it. So, I'm not reducing my rating. To [game=#19751]FFII[/game] and especially [game=#19752]FFIII[/game] players, I'll warn, this game might not meet any expectations of better-than-what-came-before. But it will do it with a better interface and graphics. To those who've never played [game=#19751]FFII[/game] and especially [game=#19752]FFIII[/game], it even better than what-came-before. And yes, I did rated [game=#7790]FF[/game] higher, [i]and[/] claim this game is better. That's because [game=#7790]FF[/game] is so much better than its contemporaries.

Someday I hope to play the real [game=#6369]Final Fantasy IV[/game].***
[29]***Note that Easytype was actually made from the untranslated US template and is [i]much[/i] easier than the actual US version. There's apparently a misconception that the US version was made from the Easytype instead.***Only version of Final Fantasy 4 officially released in the United States. This was actually a translation of the 'toned down' version made for kids in Japan. This was to make the game easer for children. It lacked most of the features in the original version- including many weapons, items, and a special item, the 'Porno Mag,' which couldn't actually be viewed.
[anonymous]***Actually Final Fantasy IV toned down and renamed for American players, this is the first installment of the Final Fantasy series for SNES. Not much really stands out in my mind about this game, it's average compared to others. The down side of this game, to me as a gamer, was not only the fact they tried to conceal the absence of the other two NES games by changing the number, but that we received the 'easytype' of the game. Many still consider this game a classic, arguably the best of the series. I've not personally finished the hard type yet, but Final Fantasy V was much nicer, in my opinion.
FFIV is still one of the best rpgs for the snes. It's plot is one of the most well thought up of any rpg.

Final Fantasy IV  Square1991 ♫saberdance enemyscan finalfantasy menus mode7 saveram Original Japanese version of Final Fantasy 4. Much more challenging than the US release which lacks most plot parts, items, text, and abilities- all of which were retained in the original japanese version. If you enjoied Final Fantasy II for SNES, I highly reccoment this [The Translated Version].

Final Fantasy V  Square1992 desperatepower finalfantasy saveram worldtree continuing with the excellent standards Final Fantasy players all know, Final Fantasy V was, in my oppinion, the peak of the series. It's class system allowed players to choose what they wanted their characters to be in the middle of the game, gaining skills for the class until it is mastered and then moving on to another. Although the class system was made even better for final fantasy tactics, FFV is still a good preview of what FFT has to offer. A gripping story that spans two worlds that were once one, good graphics and music, and great gameplay make this one of the best RPG's made. unfortunately Square/Nintendo never brought Final Fantasy V to america, but it is soon to be re-released here in the Final Fantasy Anthology.***Unofficial English translation:

And the end of the world is near. Ages ago, evil beings created powerful creatures called Espers, and unleashed them against each other. The resulting battles left their world a smoldering rubble. Legend has it the Espers destroyed themselves and most of humanity. Magic disappeared forever. Centuries have passed and a rational world now exists with Espers living only in myths, until one frozen solid since the ancient wars is unearthed. Suddenly, there are reports of magical attacks on civilians. Imperial Commandos launch raids using magic-powered MagiTek weapons. Magix is obviously alive and the world is in danger again. [29]***The last of the Final Fantasy series to be released for any Nintendo system, Final Fantasy VI showed a bit of improvement on the side of graphics. However the game falls out of balance quickly, espically after getting espers. The story was alright, but this is not one of my favorates of the series. The music from this game, however, is some of the best in any Final Fantasy game.***From my point of view this was the peak of the series, possibly not including VII. The combat system was refined from V and the story is much more gripping, even from early on. That and the increased dose of humour that was reflected in Chrono Trigger and then in FFVII, a welcome improvement.

(The odd numbering is due to the fact that this was the sixth FF game in Japan, but only the 3rd to get a US release, hence the English translation was badged as Final Fantasy III)
[Flying_Arsedoctor]***A great RPG that could've been better... the only thing that I didn't like about this game was the character classes. ALL the characters can use ALL magic, and most of the equipment can be used by everyone. There is really nothing that sets one character apart from another. Sure you have the special skills, but trust me, those become obsolete fast. Towards the end, all of your characters will be either dual-wielding or casting Ultima in every battle.

There is also an unofficial re-translation of the game, which according to the authors (RPGOne) is more faithful to the original. The patch also inserts the original Japanese titles screen and gives you the option of fixing a few infamous bugs such as the Vanish-Doom bug: [[link:http://www.rpgone.net/ RPGOne]]

Here's your chance to play the world's first role-playing game for the entry-level player.
The planet is dying. Cold winds blow. Fires rage. Trees are withering. In other words, it's brutal out there.
Only you can stop the Dark King from consuming the light from the Crystals of Earth. But don't think it'll be a walk in the park. You're up against the sleaziest of slimebags, the evilest of ecto-scum - we're talking serious monsters here.

People in the scene go wild over many of the things in Japan. J-Pop. Giant Mechas. Strategy RPGs. Well, Front Mission takes two of those three things (guess which ones), and swirls them together. The combination of giant robots with huge-ass guns fighting in a turn-based strategy environment should satisfy the inner fan-boy in all of us. The graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay is excellent SRPG fare.

[32]***This game is the hands-down champion if anyone ever asks "Hey, can you name a game that's REALLY fun to play, despite the fact that the main character looks like a stupid Lego-Man with a hole in his head and the plot is almost non-existant?"...

Let's start at the beginning. Want to hear the plot? *Begin sarcasm* OK, but be warned, it's so clever and chilling, you'll either be getting nightmares about it, or you won't because you can't sleep as you'll be up all night pondering it! *End sarcasm* The Kingdom (I think it's called Lakeland) is in trouble. Demons have appeared, and the water suddenly becomes muddy!! OH NO!! What are we going to do? Call NASIR, the Champion of Light! He'll be sure to save the day by calling the Exorcist and ordering a Brita purifier! ...Well, that would be the obvious choice of what I'D do, but just to make this game long, you get to wander all around Lakeland killing monsters, and finding the evil force behind the pollution and defeating him, thus restoring peace (and purified water) to the land.

Based on that description, you'd think I'd give it a 1, right? WRONG!! When you factor in the Gameplay, that's so fun it brings it up to the 9 I gave it. You don't know why you play the game with the stupid-looking hero and the ridiculous so-called "plot"...but you do...and you get addicted...and it's...it's...FUN!! To make it sound A LOT simpler than it is, picture Zelda only you can jump, and it's a lot more fun than that. Erm...just play it and you'll see.
